CUPE Local 7000 represents the workers at the BC Rapid Transit Company (SkyTrain Expo and Millennium Lines) and the Southern Railway of BC.
The workers at BCRTC were not represented by a union until 1985. The Office and Technical Employees Union (now CUPE 378) represented the workers until 1989. In 1990 the workers voted to change to a ‘transit union’. The Independent Canadian Transit Union Local 7 was born. Shortly after in 1994 the Southern Rail workers left the Amalgamated Transit Union and joined ICTU Local 7.
Through a series of legal issues the Independent Canadian Transit Union was dissolved and the workers at both properties voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees. On February 22nd 1999 CUPE Local 7000 was formed.
Today CUPE Local 7000 represents close to 700 workers at BCRTC and Southern Rail.
BCRTC operates and maintains the SkyTrain Expo and Millennium Lines. With 33 passenger stations, close to 70 kms of track, and a world class operations and maintenance centre, it is the largest fully automated passenger train system in the world. The CUPE Members at BCRTC work in Operations, Maintenance, and Administration.
We are affiliated with CUPE BC, CUPE Metro District Council, CUPE Fraser Valley District Council, BC Federation of Labour, and the New Westminster and District Labour Council.
Our Executive Board is made up of 12 representatives from SkyTrain and Southern Rail. The Executive Board meets once a month. We have 10 General Meetings per year and we meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month except July and August.
