About Us

CUPE Local 7000 represents the workers at the BC Rapid Transit Company (SkyTrain Expo and Millennium Lines) and the Southern Railway of BC. BCRTC employees had no union representation until 1985 when they were represented by the Office and Technical Employees Union (now MOVE UP) until 1989. In 1990, the workers voted to change to a ‘transit union’ and the Independent Canadian Transit Union (ICTU) Local 7 was born. Shortly after, in 1994 the Southern Rail workers left the Amalgamated Transit Union and joined ICTU Local 7. Through a series of legal issues, the Independent Canadian Transit Union was dissolved and the workers at both properties voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). On February 22nd 1999 CUPE Local 7000 was formed .

Today CUPE Local 7000 represents close to 900 workers at BCRTC and Southern Rail. We are tasked with keeping our transit and heavy rail moving in a safe and efficient manner, transporting over 150 million people annually on Skytrain and Southern Rail moving over 70,000 carloads per year. BCRTC operates and maintains the SkyTrain Expo and Millennium Lines. With 39 passenger stations, close to 80 kms of track, and a world class operations and maintenance centre, it is the largest fully automated passenger train system in the world. The CUPE Members at BCRTC work in Operations, Maintenance, and Administration.

Founded in 1897, Southern Rail operates out of New Westminster and is a major transporter of freight in BC. SRY owns over 125 miles of track and interchanges with four North American Class 1 railroads: CPR, BNSF, CN, and UP. The CUPE Members at Souther Rail work in Operations and Trades and Freight. We are affiliated with CUPE BC, CUPE Metro District Council, CUPE Fraser Valley District Council, BC Federation of Labour, and the New Westminster and District Labour Council. Our Executive Board is made up of 15 representatives from SkyTrain and Southern Rail. The Executive Board meets once a month. We have 10 General Meetings per year and we meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month except July and August.
